GameStop Stock Rises 4% After 358 Million Dollar Payment
GameStop stock climbed about 4% on Monday after the company paid 358.4 million dollars to halt a share count that could have increased. This payment freezes the deal at approximately 55.5 million new shares, representing about 12% of GameStop's 448.7 million shares outstanding. On August 3, GameStop agreed to exchange 1.4 billion dollars of zero-coupon convertible debt for stock, which would have resulted in the issuance of additional shares based on GME's price over 35 trading days. A lower stock price would have led to more shares being issued. Following this announcement, GME fell 12.25% to 19.06 dollars. The recent amendment prevents any further shares from being issued, as noteholders will receive 73% of the deal in shares and 27% in cash. The amendment also allows participating noteholders to adjust their positions, which is significant as convertible investors typically short the stock to hedge. GameStop moved the closing date forward by 20 days to around September 3, reducing the time for any unwinding of positions. The exchange will retire only a third of the debt, leaving approximately 2.8 billion dollars of the original 4.2 billion dollars convertible debt outstanding. GameStop's cash reserves decreased to about 5.06 billion dollars from 8.694 billion dollars, primarily due to converting its proposed eBay takeover bid into 43.4 million eBay shares. For the quarter, sales are projected to be between 780 million dollars and 800 million dollars, down from 972.2 million dollars, but the operating margin increased to roughly 20% from 6.8%, despite a 75 million dollar loss on Bitcoin and other digital assets. GME is currently trading at 18.65 dollars, 14% below its July 31 close.
